Audiology
The Audiology Department H.E.A.R. provides much-needed audiology services for the poorer sector of the population who have no medical insurance and cannot afford to be treated privately.
H.E.A.R. stands for Hearing aids, Earmoulds, Audiology and Resources. Since 1982, when the earmould laboratory was started, services have diversified and increased to help meet the needs in Jordan as well as other Middle Eastern countries. The unit now provides assessment, diagnostic and counseling services and sells and repairs hearing aids at affordable prices.
In 2003, H.E.A.R. and a umber of local and international partners embarked on a national Early Identification and Intervention programme through its neo-natal screening project. Now in the hands of the Ministry of Health, it is eventually expected to reach the whole country.
H.E.A.R. also provides training for audiology, hearing aid and earmould technicians in order to facilitate the development of audiology services in Jordan and the Middle East. Striking detail: most earmould technicians are deaf themselves.
