Prof. Samir Dabaneh - An important part of the institute
Professor Samir Dababneh has been connected with the institute practically since his birth. More than 50 years ago the institute shared its grounds with an obstetrics ward where Samir was born. However, he moved on with his family to Iraq, where he went to school, graduated and later found a wife and married. By chance he came back to Salt, where he started working in the administration of the constantly growing HLID. Samir has been living and working for the institute for over 30 years now and is responsible for any education of the deaf. This means that he is responsible for the school, the boarding school and the vocational training of the children. Thanks to his many years of work with deaf people, he is an expert in teaching and training them. For many years Samir has even been going to the neighbouring countries every year to train teachers and caretakers in dealing with deaf people. And this month is no exception. Samir was in Iraq for several weeks to teach teachers, interpreters and carers more about the Deaf culture. Personally, I perceived Samir as a hard working person during my voluntary service. He worked from morning to night and knew practically no holidays. He also lived in a room in the boarding school, which meant that he was always in direct contact with the children. His wife and family on the other hand live in Iraq. The fact that a man lives and works in another country is not unusual in Jordan, by the way. The poor labour market in the neighbouring countries is responsible for this. Samir is for me a person who has done a lot for the deaf in the Middle East and has practically dedicated his life's work to them. I admire him for that. Â
